Description
The Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM) program, managed by the Air Force, is dedicated to developing and enhancing a family of long-range, precision-guided missiles. The primary goal is to maintain and improve the operational effectiveness of these missiles against evolving threats. This involves integrating advanced technologies into the JASSM Extended Range (JASSM-ER) variants, such as the AGM-158B-2 and AGM-158D, to ensure they remain viable in complex combat scenarios. Efforts focus on enhancing missile capabilities through software upgrades, hardware improvements, and the development of new variants.

A key objective of the JASSM program is to enhance warfighting capabilities by updating software and mission planning systems. This includes ongoing flight tests and modifications to classified software to ensure operational effectiveness in various scenarios. The program also emphasizes advanced survivability through subsystem updates like cyber security enhancements and integration of new components such as an upgraded Missile Control Unit (MCU) and anti-jam GPS receivers. These efforts are crucial for maintaining missile performance against current and projected threats.

The Weapon Data Link (WDL) initiative is another significant aspect of the JASSM program. It aims to provide warfighters with the ability to retarget missiles post-launch, enhancing flexibility in engaging relocatable or time-sensitive targets. This involves developing an open-system architecture for communication nodes and integrating new technologies such as antennas and terminal sensors. The WDL effort reflects a substantial increase in scope due to additional requirements from Air Combat Command (ACC), necessitating extensive testing and evaluation activities.

Additionally, the program addresses diminishing manufacturing sources and material shortages by evaluating obsolescence plans and exploring new hardware solutions. This includes developing advanced Precision, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) capabilities to counter emerging threats. The JASSM program's comprehensive approach ensures alignment with national defense objectives while adapting to technological advancements and strategic needs.
