Description
Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM) falls under the Research, Development, Test & Evaluation budget activity of the Air Force. The specific goals and objectives of this program include the development and enhancement of the JASSM family of missiles, including JASSM Baseline (JASSM-BL/AGM-158A) and JASSM Extended Range (JASSM-ER/AGM-158B, AGM-158B-2, AGM-158B-3, and AGM-158D). The program aims to provide a long-range, conventional air-to-surface, autonomous, precision-guided, low observable, standoff cruise missile compatible with fighter and bomber aircraft. It focuses on attacking high-value fixed or relocatable targets with precision while minimizing the threat to launch aircraft. Additionally, the program aims to address threats to JASSM survivability by evaluating high payoff technology development, performing risk reduction activities, and investigating new variants and/or alternate missions that may use JASSM attributes.
The program also includes efforts to enhance warfighting capability through software and mission planning changes to ensure operational effectiveness in classified scenarios. It involves the development of advanced survivability, integration, and testing to enhance missile survivability through subsystem updates including cyber security implementation. Furthermore, the program focuses on developing the Electronic Safe and Arm Fuze (ESAF) to resolve obsolescence and reliability issues while improving yield and potentially lowering costs. Additionally, it includes the development of the Weapon Data Link (WDL) to allow warfighters to retarget weapons via line-of-sight and beyond-line-of-sight for attacking relocatable or time-sensitive targets post-aircraft release. The program also addresses system improvement for maintaining and upgrading capability through engineering change proposals (ECPs) to maximize missile performance against newly matured capabilities and emerging threats.
Overall, the program aims to continuously develop and enhance the JASSM family of missiles to maintain first-day war capability, fulfill Combatant Commanders Operational Plan objectives, address threats to survivability, and provide operational flexibility against current and projected threats.
