Description

The Food Waste Reduction Grant Program is a $2 million initiative administered by the NYS Dept. of Economic Development designed to reduce food waste by diverting excess edible food and food scraps from landfills through capital equipment program assistance grants to municipalities, not-for-profit organizations, or municipalities or not-for-profit organizations applying on behalf of a NYS Business. Program Assistance will be awarded on a competitive basis and will not exceed 50% of the total project cost, with a minimum award of $50,000 and a maximum award of $500,000. Successful food waste reduction projects are those with a strong likelihood of building capacity and infrastructure in the State to reduce food waste by diverting excess edible food and food scraps from landfills, ultimately resulting in reductions of methane emissions.

Background

Work Details
Eligible entities can receive grants covering up to 50% of project costs, with a minimum award of $50,000 and a maximum of $500,000.

Projects must focus on capital investments that divert excess edible food and food scraps from landfills. Eligible costs include machinery and equipment for reducing or donating food waste, such as compactors, dehydrators, trucks, and refrigeration equipment. Improvements to real property integral to project outcomes are also eligible. Ineligible costs include consultant fees, permit fees, energy production costs, and any expenses incurred prior to the award.
