Grant Description
Nurse Education Practice Quality and Retention- Registered Nurse Training Program - Dallas College (DC) is a comprehensive community college that serves the residents of Dallas County and the surrounding area in North Central Texas. Since its establishment in 1965, DC has grown to seven physical campuses and multiple learning and educational centers across the county.
DC enrolls a total of 85,000 credit and 20,000 continuing education students each semester. The district office is located at 1601 Botham Jean Blvd., Dallas, Texas 75215. The website address of the college is https://www.dallascollege.edu/pages/default.aspx.
DC is requesting $1,050,000 over a three-year period to fund the implementation of a comprehensive program designed to increase the diversity of the nursing workforce in Dallas County (Year 1 $349,572, Year 2 $348,492, and Year 3 $349,306). The goal of the project is to create intentional career pathways to increase the number of students from underrepresented backgrounds who enroll in and graduate from the DC nursing program, resulting in a nursing workforce that more fully reflects the diversity of the community.
The project has established four goals and associated objectives:
1. Increase enrollment, retention, and completion of students from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds in the Dallas College Associate Degree Nursing Program.
2. Improve understanding and application of social determinants of health and other health disparities among nursing students, graduates, and faculty.
3. Increase diversity of Dallas College nursing faculty.
4. Support enrollment of students from diverse and economically disadvantaged populations into Dallas College's Bachelor of Nursing Bridge Program.
DC proposes a project period of September 30, 2022, to September 29, 2025. The first cycle of the project will begin with the Fall 2022 semester. The project will serve a minimum of 70 participants each project year for a total of 210 participants served over three years with data-driven interventions and supports such as RN and peer mentors, financial support, tutoring, support by minority professional and community organizations and support groups, and weekly meetings to deal with the impact of social determinants on student success.
DC proposes to address funding priority 1 and 2 as a public entity in the state of Texas which is listed in the HRSA publication "Supply and Demand Projections of the Nursing Workforce 2014-2030" as a state with the greatest nursing shortage. Additionally, DC proposes to address funding preference "substantially benefits underserved populations" meeting the qualifications of being a federally designated medically underserved area (MUA).
The project has been designed by the DC School of Health Sciences, under the leadership of Dr. Tetsuya Umebayashi, D.N.P., R.N., Vice Provost of the School of Health Sciences. The proposed project will be managed by Dr. Umebayashi, along with the Dean of Nursing, Dr. Becky Small, Ed.D., R.N., and a Project Assistant Director. The Assistant Director, who will supervise the project daily, will be a registered nurse who will be hired upon the notice of the award. All services and programs will be offered at the DC Nursing Program, which is located at the DC-El Centro Campus, Brookhaven Campus, and Mountainview Campus in Dallas, Texas. Beginning with the Fall of 2022, these programs and services will be provided to all eligible incoming nursing students who agree to participate in project cohorts.
The project meets the requirements for the funding and has strong merit and every likelihood of success, based on our past successes with educating traditionally underrepresented students.
