Cooperative Agreement
Overview
Grant Description
Cooperative recovery of two critically endangered galliformes. This proposal seeks to prevent extinction of the Masked Bobwhite Quail (MBQ) and Attwater Prairie Chicken (APC) within the U.S. and maximize their recovery by accomplishing the following actions identified in both species recovery plans.
1) Prevent extinction and reversal of recent program advancements through support and enhancement of captive and biosecure populations of MBQ and APC at the George Miksch Sutton Avian Research Center (Sutton Center).
2) Support expanded breeding, rearing, and genetic management of MBQ and APC. Captive breeding is the sole source of birds for re-establishing viable populations of both species in the wild, and the Sutton Center is an integral part of the captive breeding program for both species.
This funding will enable the Sutton Center to produce vigorous, healthy chicks (2,000 MBQ, 100-200 APC) annually for release into wild habitats. Continued support is critical to maintaining and enhancing recovery successes, which the USFWS has persevered 30 years to achieve.
