The proposed project expands the existing Hale Makua Health Services ("HMHS") skilled nursing facilities located in Kahului and Wailuku. HMHS is planning to construct a new building in a lot adjacent to the current Kahului facility. It includes construction of a new rehabilitation facility on 2.831 acres of land. The Maui County Council has approved the donation of the land by the County of Maui to HMHS.
The current draft concept for the new facility includes an approximately 42,441 square foot two-story building together with an on-site parking area. It will provide much-needed healthcare services such as skilled nursing and home health services, and an outpatient rehabilitation facility (including physical, occupational, and speech therapies) which will enable patients to be discharged home with the ability to return for therapy.
The proposed rehabilitation facility is part of the Hale Makua Master Plan, which also includes renovations to the existing aging Hale Makua Kahului facility and relocation of the Wailuku facility services to the Kahului campus. The new facility will include new dually licensed and Medicare-certified SNF/ICF beds and will be certified by CMS as part of the Hale Makua Kahului facility.
The planned expansion directly aligns with the goals and objectives of the State of Hawaii Health Services and Facilities Plan for Maui County and will increase long-term care beds and services, position the home health operations for growth, and build a workforce to serve the aging population and long-term care needs of the Maui community.
The grant funds being requested will be used for the design and development of the project only. Hale Makua will fund the remaining costs of the proposed project.
