Type of Project: Construction - New Community Health Center Campus and Provider Training Facility

Projected Date for Project Completion: November 2024

Sun Life Family Health Center (Sun Life) is requesting $6 million to supplement the new Next Generation Health Center Campus and Provider Training Center in Casa Grande, Arizona. Sun Life is committed to ensuring that an excellent level of provider training is available for future healthcare professionals who will be providing quality healthcare to the residents of Pinal County.

The objective of this project is to build the Provider Training Center tandem with the new Next Generation Health Center Campus by November 2024 and develop a graduate medical education program for primary care providers by January 2025. The vision of the project will consist of a stacked 4-story building with a patient-centric approach. Each floor will feature 4 pods with 12 exam rooms each and will sit on 10 acres. The module design will provide for increased provider productivity with a patient-focused atmosphere and provide a fluid design for the healthcare team.

Sun Life has a 45-year history as a Federally Qualified Health Center in Pinal County, a predominantly rural region in central Arizona. Pinal is rapidly growing and is currently home to over 425,000 residents. In 2021, Sun Life welcomed an astounding 47,233 unduplicated patients and continues to grow yearly. To keep up with this growing community and its unmet needs, Sun Life proposes to develop this Next Generation Campus and Provider Training Center. The project will increase access to healthcare by collaborating with community partners from Banner-Casa Grande Medical Center, A.T. Still University, the Arizona State University, and the University of Arizona.

This project will substantially expand the educational training of future healthcare professionals. These collective partnerships will allow Sun Life to double its reach to potential healthcare professionals, which means this will also double the geographic footprint and opportunity to offer a variety of services that will enhance the health and wellbeing of all residents in Pinal County. Sun Life will be able to expand the access, supply, distribution, and quality of healthcare. In addition, a group of future healthcare professionals will be offered an opportunity to attend programs and receive the training and rotations they need to be equipped to eventually provide services in this rural community. This funding will create a Provider Training Center for dental, behavioral health, pediatrics, family obstetrics, gynecology planning, and surgical programs. This addition will help to strengthen Sun Life, to grow its impact, and accomplish its mission and goals.

The Sun Life Provider Training Center will provide future healthcare professionals with much-needed residency rotations in a central Arizona location. The completion of the Provider Training Center project, which is to expand health occupation education and training, promote evidence-based healthcare practices, improve the geographic distribution of healthcare workers, and increase access to care for underserved, under-insured populations, will help to ensure Sun Life's integrated model remains intact.
