Overview
Grant Description
The Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in New Orleans is sponsored by the New Orleans Council on Aging (NOCOA). NOCOA is a 501.c.3 non-profit since 1974.
An estimated 320 volunteers will serve RSVP in New Orleans. Of this number, a minimum of 103 RSVP volunteers will be placed in the primary focus outcome assignments. Some of their activities will include assisting the disadvantaged and homeless people of New Orleans to secure food through: assisting low-income residents and homeless people to access food, as well as with applying for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), assisting those that are affected by the opioid epidemic, financial literacy education, assisting veterans in accessing state and federal benefits, and supporting veterans with mental health access, and assisting with tutoring/mentoring to students who are from economically disadvantaged families.
The volunteers will serve a network of volunteer stations such as the Franklin Avenue Baptist Church Share the Harvest Food Bank and Senior Soldiers, St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, Volunteers of America of Greater New Orleans Transitional Housing Program, the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System (SLVHCS), the Jewish Community Center-Respite Program, the University of New Orleans Upward Bound, and Unity of Greater New Orleans (GNO)-for the homeless of New Orleans. RSVP volunteer stations are also in other focus areas throughout the community, People Programs, the New Orleans Council on Aging, and the New Canal Lighthouse Museum.
The primary focus area of this project is Healthy Futures. At the end of the three-year grant, RSVP of New Orleans will have assisted economically disadvantaged residents including veterans, the homeless, and families in need, with securing food, budgeting their income to help alleviate making the decision of purchasing food or paying their living expenses or more overly paying for their medication. RSVP of New Orleans volunteers will also serve at senior centers, local museums, provide tutoring/mentoring to students who are economically disadvantaged, help New Orleans residents with emergency preparedness and response, assist seniors at respite programs, and the volunteers will also assist veterans and veteran families in accessing benefits.
The CNCS federal investment of $102,633 will be supplemented by $44,927 of non-federal resources.
