Cooperative Agreement
Overview
Grant Description
This agreement will provide funding for Western Arkansas Planning and Development District to inventory, characterize, assess, and conduct cleanup planning and community involvement related activities for brownfield sites in the western portion of Fort Smith, Arkansas.
The community-wide assessment funds will be used to conduct 15 Phase I and up to 10 Phase II environmental site assessments. Grant funds also will be used to develop five cleanup or reuse plans and support community engagement activities.
Priority sites include an 85-acre vacant property along the Arkansas River, and a vacant and unutilized former retail building in the city's historic downtown district.
Brownfields are real property, the expansion, development or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.
