Grant Description
Description: The purpose of this award is to provide funding under the Inflation Reduction Act to the Utah Department of Environmental Quality.

Specifically, the recipient will improve air quality and reduce pollution at the Salt Lake City Intermodal Terminal and in the surrounding area through the deployment of zero-emission equipment and infrastructure at the port.

Activities: The activities include creating a port-specific zero-emission incentive program for electric drayage trucks, cargo handling equipment, switcher locomotives, and associated electric charging infrastructure.

Funding is also included for the creation of a solar microgrid system for the port.

Subrecipient: One subaward in the amount of $900,000 will be awarded to Union Pacific, owner of the Salt Lake City Intermodal Terminal, for support activities/costs including, but not limited to, safety planning, operational planning, workforce training, and protocol development.

A second subaward in the amount of $13,950,000 will also be awarded to Union Pacific for a solar microgrid to be installed at the Salt Lake City Intermodal Terminal.

The microgrid purchase includes a battery bank, a 1 MW microgrid system, as well as design and other contingencies.

Outcomes: The anticipated deliverables include the purchase and deployment of 87 zero-emission trucks; deployment of 2 zero-emission switcher locomotives, 54 pieces of zero-emission cargo handling equipment, and 92 pieces of charging infrastructure equipment; and installation of 1 solar microgrid system.

Other deliverables include project-specific public engagement and safety planning, operational planning, workforce training, and protocol development.

The expected outcomes include emissions reductions, diesel fuel use reductions, improved air quality near port communities, promotion of sustainable development, increased reliability and resilience of critical infrastructure, and improved safety and operational practices.

The intended beneficiaries include the Utah Department of Environmental Quality (Grantee), Utah Inland Port Authority (Partner), Union Pacific (Partner), and PacifiCorp (Partner).

Indirect beneficiaries include near-port communities, such as Salt Lake County residents, who will experience improved ambient air quality.
