Small Research Grant Program for the Next Generation of Researchers in AD/ADRD Research (R03 Clinical Trial Optional)

ID: PA-25-246 • Type: Posted

Description

This Small Research Grant (R03) will support meritorious projects to provide needed scientific insight to improve the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and/or care for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD). Specifically, this NOFO will support projects covering a wide range of topics related to AD/ADRD. The overall goal of this NOFO is (i) to encourage the next generation of researchers to pursue research and academic careers in AD/ADRD research; and (ii) to stimulate established researchers who have not had a major award in AD/ADRD research to perform pilot studies to develop new, innovative AD/ADRD research programs that leverage and build upon their existing expertise.
Background
The Small Research Grant (R03) program, issued by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through the National Institute on Aging (NIA), aims to support innovative research projects that enhance understanding and treatment of Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD). This funding opportunity seeks to encourage new researchers in the field while also stimulating established researchers who have not received major awards in AD/ADRD to explore pilot studies that build on their existing expertise. The overarching goal is to address the shortage of scientists capable of conducting interdisciplinary research necessary for advancing knowledge in AD/ADRD.

Grant Details
The grant will support a wide range of projects related to AD/ADRD, including but not limited to: understanding the trajectory of dementia for patients and caregivers; basic science research elucidating systemic factors associated with AD/ADRD; social, behavioral, psychological, and economic research on health disparities; early-stage clinical trials; systems biology approaches; and exposomics research. The program encourages applications from early-stage investigators and those from diverse backgrounds. Each project should be well-defined and achievable within a two-year period, with budgets up to $100,000 in direct costs per year.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, local governments, state governments, tribal governments, and foreign organizations. Individuals from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Applicants must not have had prior substantial experience or major awards in AD/ADRD research. Each principal investigator is eligible for one award through this program.

Period of Performance
The maximum project period is two years. Applications may request budgets for up to $100,000 in direct costs per year.

Grant Value
The total value of the grant is contingent upon NIH appropriations with individual awards potentially reaching up to $200,000 over two years.

Place of Performance
The specific geographic locations for performance are open to eligible organizations globally.
