NIH Directors New Innovator Award Program (DP2 Clinical Trial Optional)

Background
The NIH Directors New Innovator Award Program supports early stage investigators of exceptional creativity who propose highly innovative research projects with the potential to produce a major impact on broad, important problems relevant to the mission of NIH. The program aims to support the best possible researchers and research. Applications are sought which reflect the full diversity of the research workforce. Individuals from diverse backgrounds and from the full spectrum of eligible institutions in all geographic locations are strongly encouraged to apply to this Funding Opportunity Announcement. The NIH Director's New Innovator Award Program complements ongoing efforts by NIH and its Institutes and Centers to fund early stage investigators through R01 grants.

Grant Details
The NIH Director's New Innovator Award addresses two important goals: stimulating highly innovative research and supporting promising Early Stage Investigators. It is designed specifically to support unusually creative investigators with highly innovative research ideas at an early stage of their career when they may lack the preliminary data required for a conventional R01 grant application. The award is for five years and will be issued in two multi-year funded segments with a three-year award followed by a two-year award. Applications are welcome in all research areas broadly relevant to the mission of NIH, including, but not limited to, the behavioral, medical, natural, social, applied, and formal sciences. Research may be basic, translational, or clinical.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, nonprofits other than institutions of higher education, for-profit organizations, state governments, county governments, city or township governments, special district governments, Indian/Native American tribal governments (federally recognized), independent school districts, public housing authorities/Indian housing authorities, Native American tribal organizations (other than federally recognized tribal governments), faith-based or community-based organizations, regional organizations. Foreign Institutions are not eligible to apply.

Period of Performance
Project periods will be for five years. No cost extensions will be allowed per NIH grants policy.

Grant Value
NIH intends to commit approximately $44.1 million for approximately 35 awards in FY 2024. Awards will be in two multi-year segments, the first of three years followed by one of two years. The three-year segment will have an award budget up to $900,000 in direct costs. The two-year segment will have an award budget up to $600,000 in direct costs.
