Background
The Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E), an organization within the Department of Energy (DOE), is chartered by Congress to enhance the economic and energy security of the United States through the development of energy technologies. ARPA-E funds research on and the development of transformative science and technology solutions to address the energy and environmental missions of the Department.

Grant Details
This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is open to U.S. universities, national laboratories, industry, and individuals. The FOA covers a wide range of topics to encourage the submission of innovative and unconventional ideas in energy technology. The objective is to support high-risk R&D leading to the development of potentially disruptive new technologies across the full spectrum of energy applications. Awards under this program may take the form of analyses or exploratory research that provides the agency with information useful for the subsequent development of focused technology programs.

Eligibility Requirements
U.S. citizens or permanent residents may apply for funding in their individual capacity as a Standalone Applicant, as the lead for a Project Team, or as a member of a Project Team. For-profit entities, educational institutions, and nonprofits incorporated in the United States are eligible to apply for funding as a Standalone Applicant, as the lead organization for a Project Team, or as a member of a Project Team. Foreign entities are also eligible to apply for funding but must designate a subsidiary or affiliate incorporated under U.S. laws to receive funding.

Period of Performance
The FOA is open continuously until otherwise amended. The period of performance for each Exploratory Topic varies, with different application due dates and anticipated award dates specified in Table 1.

Grant Value
Approximately $45-55 million is available subject to the availability of appropriated funds, to be shared between FOAs DE-FOA-0002784 and DE-FOA-0002785. The total amount to be awarded for each Exploratory Topic is specified in Table 1.
