Description

Statement of Work: Multibeam sonar repair
Introduction:
The U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) Woods Hole Coastal & Marine Science Center (WHCMSC) has the need to repair the multibeam sonar that was sent in for annual inspection and service. The proposed repair is needed to maintain the capability of digital acoustic seafloor mapping of U.S. near shore coastal waters and inland waterways. Collection of bathymetry and backscatter data, when coupled with an understanding of sub-surface geology, is fundamental to USGS research and provides a framework for addressing coastal erosion, coastal evolution, shoreline/coastal response to large-scale storm systems, offshore resources, and sediment transport studies. The WHSC requires a precision multibeam sonar system to conduct digital acoustic mapping of our coastal oceans, estuaries and coastal shoreline. The repair to the existing system is a more cost-efficient means to maintain these capabilities than procuring an entirely new system.
System Requirements and Salient Characteristics:
This work requires the following measurements and specifications:
Light weight (< 8 kg) sonar head assembly
190 420kHz wide band frequency range
1 degree center beam across track beam width at 400kHz
2 degree center beam across track beam width at 200kHz
1 degree along-track beam width at 400kHz
2 degree along-track beam width at 200kHz
Minimum 10 beams to maximum 1024 beams
0.5 to 150 meter typical depth rating at 400kHz
0.5 to 375 meter typical depth rating at 200kHz
300 meter max depth rating at 400kHz
575 meter max depth at 200kHz
50 pings/s max ping rate
Pulse length 15 to 300 microseconds
Depth resolution 6mm
Sonar head depth rating 50 meters
Normalized backscatter
Integrates with existing multibeam sonar hardware.
Background
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Woods Hole Coastal & Marine Science Center (WHCMSC) requires repairs for a multibeam sonar system that is essential for conducting digital acoustic seafloor mapping in U.S. near shore coastal waters and inland waterways. This repair is necessary to maintain the capability of collecting bathymetry and backscatter data, which is crucial for USGS research on coastal erosion, shoreline response to storm systems, and sediment transport studies. The repair is deemed more cost-effective than procuring a new system.

Work Details
The contractor will perform repairs on the multibeam sonar unit, specifically addressing issues with failing channels in the receive transducer. The work requires adherence to specific system requirements including:

- A lightweight sonar head assembly under 8 kg
- Frequency range of 190-420 kHz
- Beam width specifications at various frequencies
- Depth ratings up to 575 meters
- Maximum ping rate of 50 pings/s
- Integration with existing multibeam sonar hardware.

The contractor must ensure that all repairs restore the functionality of the sonar system to meet operational standards.

Period of Performance
The contract will be performed from March 1, 2025, to September 30, 2025.

Place of Performance
The contract will be performed at the USGS Woods Hole Coastal & Marine Science Center located at 384 Woods Hole Road, Woods Hole, MA 02543.
