Robust Quantum Sensors (RoQS) Program Solicitation

ID: DARPA-PS-25-11 • Type: Solicitation

Description

Posted: March 26, 2025, 12:31 p.m. EDT

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative proposals in the area of robust quantum sensing. Proposed research should investigate approaches that enable revolutionary advances in science, devices, or systems. Specifically excluded is research that primarily results in evolutionary improvements to the existing state of practice.
Robust Quantum Sensors (RoQS) seeks to bring quantum sensors to Department of Defense (DoD) platforms. While quantum sensors have demonstrated exceptional laboratory performance in several modalities, their performance degrades once the sensor is placed on platforms. RoQS seeks innovative physics approaches that mitigate this degradation. RoQS aims to develop and demonstrate quantum sensors that inherently resist performance degradation from platform interferers, with demonstration of the sensors on a government-provided platform.
RoQS aims to transition quantum sensors onto DoD platforms with associated Programs of Record (PoRs) fulfilling outstanding Requirements . RoQS also seeks to engage with platform makers within industry to identify DoD systems for quantum sensor integration and, ultimately, transition the sensors to those platforms.

Background
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative proposals for the Robust Quantum Sensors (RoQS) program, which aims to advance quantum sensing technologies for integration into Department of Defense (DoD) platforms. The goal of RoQS is to develop quantum sensors that maintain high performance despite environmental challenges encountered on various platforms, thereby enhancing the capabilities of DoD systems.

Work Details
The RoQS program consists of multiple technical areas (TA1 and TA2) with specific tasks:
- TA1 focuses on developing quantum sensors capable of operating on any DoD platform, requiring performers to demonstrate state-of-the-art performance without sensitivity degradation.
- TA2 involves conducting a platform integration study that identifies how quantum sensors can be integrated into existing DoD systems and assesses the feasibility of these integrations.
- Phase 1a will identify Programs of Record (PoRs) with unmet requirements suitable for quantum sensor integration, while Phase 1b will specify system integration requirements for selected platforms.
- Successful teams from both TAs will collaborate to propose Phase 2 efforts aimed at integrating quantum sensors into specific DoD platforms.
- Deliverables include a minimum of two complete and functional final Phase 1 sensors, regular updates on intellectual property status, and participation in scheduled meetings and testing activities.

Period of Performance
The anticipated program start date is August 1, 2025, with various phases including Phase 1 lasting approximately 30 months and subsequent phases extending up to 12 months for integration tasks.

Place of Performance
The contract work will primarily take place in locations relevant to the development and testing of quantum sensors, including government-provided platforms such as helicopters.
