The objective of this acquisition is to provide comprehensive summer training to undergraduate students from Minority Serving (MSIs) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), supporting their preparation for attending STEM-M programs at the NIH or other research institutions in the next few years. The broad objectives of this acquisition include:
Increased confidence to participate in biomedical research/STEM fields
Increased interested in pursuing STEM bachelor's or graduate degrees
Increased knowledge in pathways to clinical and/or research careers
Increased understanding of health disparities
Strong sense of community between peers, staff, and NIH officials

Background
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) is seeking to provide comprehensive summer training to undergraduate students from Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

The goal of this acquisition is to prepare these students for participation in STEM-M programs at the NIH or other research institutions. The program aims to increase confidence in biomedical research, interest in pursuing STEM degrees, knowledge of clinical and research career pathways, understanding of health disparities, and foster a strong sense of community among participants.

Work Details
The contractor will conduct a summer internship program for 10-15 rising freshman and sophomore undergraduate students with little or no prior research experience, focusing on STEM-M careers. The program will include:
- An introductory research session during the base period summer program.
- A one-day fall activity that builds on the summer program.
- A more advanced curriculum for Option Period One that builds off lessons learned in the base period.
- Recruitment of students capable of returning for subsequent activities.
- Coordination with local universities for laboratory and clinical environments.
- Development of a comprehensive curriculum covering clinical and basic research, neuroscience, mental health, health disparities, professional development topics, and various biomedical careers.
- Enrichment activities during the academic year including professional development workshops and career sessions.
- Weekly evaluations for participant feedback and tracking academic progression post-program.

Base Period: 03/20/2025 – 03/19/2026; Option Period One: 03/20/2026 – 03/19/2027

Place of Performance
The program will be conducted at participating MSIs and HBCUs.
