Background
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Strategic Acquisition Center – Frederick (SAC-F), on behalf of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Human Systems Integration (HSI) Office of Health Informatics (OHI) Clinical Informatics and Data Management Office (CIDMO) intends to negotiate with Design Interactive, Inc. for an SBIR award under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program. The Office of Naval Research funded the development of a web-based knowledge curation and distribution system designed to support semiautomated knowledge sharing and make accessing content intuitive, efficient, and effective. Referred to as Contribute, Approve, Curate, Hyper-Distribution Engine (CACHE), this training system, along with supplemental training engineering analysis, can be leveraged by Instructional Systems Design (ISD) program to help VA Medical Centers (VAMC) mature the usability competencies of their clinical informatics staff.

Work Details
The ISD program seeks to leverage the CACHE system to help train field informaticists on best VA practices for improving the usability of health information system configurations at VA Medical Centers. Maturing the usability competency of field informaticists will help them in their roles to improve care delivery at their local facilities by optimizing clinical workflows, clinical decision support tools, EHR configurations, and provider training. The initial and primary target of usability training will be the Field Usability Specialist (FUS), a new role assigned to the VAMC informatics team, but matrixed to and supported by the HSI division.
