Heimdall Industry Day

ID: DARPA-SN-25-02 • Type: Special Notice

Description

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Tactical Technology Office (TTO) is sponsoring an Industry Day to provide information to potential proposers on the objectives of the Heimdall program in advance of a planned Program Solicitation (PS). The objective of the Heimdall program is the development and demonstration of secure Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) aids that enhance effectiveness of naval gun systems solely through software updates inside the Mk 160 Gun Computer System (GCS) onboard U.S. Navy surface combatants. This program solicitation seeks proposals that demonstrate an ability to align with existing government architecture and data format for more rapid transition to operational units.
Background
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Tactical Technology Office (TTO) is sponsoring an Industry Day to provide information to potential proposers on the objectives of the Heimdall program.

The goal of the Heimdall program is to develop and demonstrate secure Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) aids that enhance the effectiveness of naval gun systems through software updates within the Mk 160 Gun Computer System (GCS) onboard U.S. Navy surface combatants. This program aims to facilitate a more rapid transition to operational units by aligning with existing government architecture and data formats.

Work Details
The Heimdall program consists of two six-month phases: Development Phase and Integration Phase.

The Development Phase involves multiple performers conducting algorithm development activities aimed at improving target identification from current electro-optical or infrared sensor feeds and enhancing tracking of selected objects. This phase will conclude with an in-lab evaluation of performance in a simulation environment of the Mk 160 GCS, emphasizing alignment with current software architecture and data formats.

The Integration Phase will involve a limited set of performers who will coordinate with DARPA's software development team for final integration with the software trunk, leading to operational release. This phase includes a range test event and culminates in an at-sea test to validate technology for operational use.

Period of Performance
The envisioned Heimdall program notionally consists of two six-month phases, totaling approximately one year for both phases.

Place of Performance
The contract work will be performed virtually, with specific tasks likely conducted at various locations as determined by the performers.
