ID: 140P5322R0011 • Type: Solicitation

Description

Great Smoky: ELKMONT MANHOLE SEALING PIPE BURSTING
Background
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GRSM) is in Tennessee and North Carolina and consists of nearly 521,000 acres. The park was established by Congress on June 15, 1934. The Park’s mission is to protect, preserve, and interpret the natural, cultural, and historical resources for the benefit and inspiration of present and future generations. There are over 12 million visitors annually.
Elkmont Campground is the largest and busiest campground in Great Smoky Mountains National Park with a total of 220 campsites and twelve comfort stations. Domestic wastewater from the campground is treated on-site with its own sewer plant. The sanitary sewer system within the campground is owned and maintained by the NPS.

Work Details
The project involves rehabilitating the subject sanitary sewer system at Elkmont Campground. This includes cleaning and lining the manholes with an epoxy coating, pipe bursting selected collection lines as needed, and inserting a new 8-inch High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe to eliminate future leakage into the system and ensure effective operation to prevent threats to public health.
The two sections that require replacement by means of 'pipe bursting' are one in A-loop of the campground and the second one in L and M-loop. A-loop manholes affected are EL MH A11 and ELMH A12, totaling 245 linear feet in length. L and M-loop manholes affected are EL MH B9 and EL MH B10, totaling 249 linear feet in length.
Once pipe bursting and new eight-inch HDPE line is installed, these four manholes will need to be relined. Ground disturbance would be limited to excavation of a six-foot diameter hole at about two-to-ten-foot depth at each manhole to allow for operation of the pipe bursting equipment and the replacement of one.
