Background
The contract is for Support of Global Modeling and Data Assimilation research conducted by Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) scientists in the Earth Science Division (Code 610). The contract will support the full range of research and development activities of the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO, Code 610.1). The GMAO develops, operates, and maintains comprehensive models and data assimilation systems for the Earth’s atmosphere, ocean, land surface and cryosphere, including atmospheric composition and ocean biogeochemistry. These systems are configured to support NASA’s Earth Science missions, research activities, and various applications. The GMAO effort includes the development and implementation of advanced coupled models to support the assimilation systems and to address key scientific questions and prediction goals identified by the NASA Science Mission Directorate.

Work Details
The contractor shall support projects that encompass all aspects of the GMAO research and development effort. This includes developing or modifying major software systems/subsystems and fundamental scientific understanding of the Earth System processes being simulated. The contractor shall provide all necessary resources, including personnel, facilities, equipment, and materials to meet the requirements. The work consists of efforts focused on the GEOS models and data assimilation systems such as development of Earth system model components, forefront data assimilation systems, maintenance and development of software tools for system workflow, testing and evaluation of improved GEOS model components and data assimilation algorithms, development of stable data assimilation systems used to generate climate reanalyses, maintenance and development of capabilities to enhance the use of GEOS-based products in support of NASA’s space missions, field experiments, Earth science research, and applications for societal benefit.
