DCB and SLS Tests of a series of welded thermoplastic composites

Background
The contract involves conducting DCB and SLS tests on a series of welded thermoplastic composites. The objective of these tests is to support TDEA’s study of thermoplastic composite material weldability via mechanical joint performance evaluation. The tests will include developmental welding methods and materials, several non-standard procedures, and may yield unexpected results outside the scope of the ASTM standards, requiring special care and attention to ensure the success of the test program.

Work Details
The work involves conducting single lap shear (SLS) and double cantilever beam (DCB) tests on materials welded with ultrasonic, induction, and conduction methods. Each welding method includes 5 materials: AS4/PPS, AS4/PEEK, AS4/PEI, T700-LM-PAEK, and M30S/PEKK (thin ply). The SLS and DCB tests will be performed on a total of 30 coupons for each welding method. The contract also requires a NASA representative to be on-site during the initial testing of DCB and SLS specimens to witness the procedures, results, and approve any changes to the requirements or ASTM standard procedures.
