ASOS Thunderstorm Sensor

Background
The National Weather Service (NWS) Office of Observations (OBS) is responsible for the operations and maintenance of automated fielded systems that sense the atmosphere to support surface-based aviation operations.

The Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) program is a joint mission involving the NWS, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the Department of Defense (DOD). ASOS is the primary system for collecting and reporting surface-weather observations, particularly at airports, aiding in aviation operations, weather forecasting, and timely issuance of warnings.

This requirement focuses on Thunderstorm Sensors that are compatible with the existing ASOS infrastructure and provide critical measurements of cloud-to-cloud, cloud-to-ground, and intra-cloud lightning discharges.

Work Details
The contract requires Thunderstorm Sensors that are compatible with the ASOS infrastructure. These sensors must provide critical measurements related to lightning discharge. Specific requirements include:
- Compatibility with existing ASOS systems
- Capability to measure cloud-to-cloud, cloud-to-ground, and intra-cloud lightning discharges
- Compliance with specifications outlined in Attachment I. Interested parties must submit capability statements detailing their ability to meet these specifications.

Place of Performance
The products will be delivered to locations supported by the National Weather Service's Automated Surface Observing System.
