Background
The contract is for overseas support activities for the US Army Medical Research Directorate – Africa’s Infectious Disease Surveillance Program in sub-Saharan Africa. The contract supports the mission of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) to survey and characterize etiologic agents of infectious disease, including those causing febrile vector-borne infections (FVBI), respiratory infections (RI), enteric infections (EI), sexually transmitted infections (STI), and antimicrobial resistant bacterial infections (AMR). The U.S. Department of Defense, Armed Forces Health Surveillance Division, Global Emerging Infections Surveillance (GEIS) Branch is the primary funding entity for the US Army Medical Research Directorate – Africa (USAMRD-A). The GEIS strategic plan is leveraged three ways (surveillance, communication, and program management) and five means (subject matter experts, GCC priorities, funding, collaborations, and relationships) in order to ensure its end goal to provide continuous and globally-integrated infectious disease surveillance is met.

Work Details
The contract covers countries that are priority nations in this effort, which are Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, and Uganda. The contract includes overseas support activities for USAMRD-A’s infectious disease research and surveillance efforts in sub-Saharan Africa. Surveillance sites in African countries are located in both military and civilian hospitals in multiple regions and cover a broad range of cultures and environments.

The contract will be performed in sub-Saharan African countries including Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda.
