4. IMPACT: REQUIREMENT:
The Outlying Landing Field of San Nicolas Island (SNI) is vital to the mission of Naval
Base Ventura County and Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (NAWCWD). San Nicolas
Island serves two primary functions; it serves as a launch platform for short and medium
range missile testing and as an observation facility for missile testing. A growing
tertiary mission is as an international facility for testing and development. The runway
at SNI is an integral access point to receive base support and operational personnel as
well as logistical support. SNI is a "Divert" airfield for Fleet Sea Range Operations.
CURRENT SITUATION:
Various structures and obstructions are located within the airfield primary surfaces
areas at San Nicholas Island (SNI). These structures and obstructions include utility
valves, signage, power poles, flagpoles, concrete slabs over three inches, manholes,
water tanks, culvert, above ground water lines, vacant buildings, and weather station.
