Description
The Next Generation Jammer (NGJ) program is a pivotal Navy initiative aimed at advancing Airborne Electronic Attack (AEA) capabilities. It focuses on addressing current and emerging electronic warfare challenges by enhancing radar and communications jamming effectiveness. Utilizing an Open Systems Architecture, the NGJ allows for rapid updates to counter evolving threats, ensuring the system remains a key enabler across various military operations, including strike warfare and counterinsurgency.
A significant component of this program is the Next Generation Jammer Mid-Band (NGJ-MB), designed to fill capability gaps in the middle frequency bands of the electromagnetic spectrum. The NGJ-MB will be integrated into the EA-18G aircraft, replacing the legacy AN/ALQ-99 Tactical Jamming System. This integration aims to provide increased stand-off distances and jamming capacity, enhancing operational agility against enemy threats. The program reached Milestone C in FY 2021, with Initial Operational Capability anticipated in FY 2024.
In FY 2025, efforts are concentrated on procuring shipsets of AN/ALQ-249 NGJ-MB for Lot 5 production. This includes support equipment, training materials, and logistics support to facilitate squadron stand-up and deployment readiness. The procurement strategy emphasizes production efficiencies and cost reductions through increased quantities and streamlined processes. Additionally, training resources are allocated to update maintenance and aircrew courseware, ensuring personnel are equipped to operate this advanced technology effectively.
Support activities for the NGJ-MB include comprehensive engineering efforts from various field activities to sustain production and establish organic depot capabilities. Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) is crucial for providing interim contractor support and fleet service representatives during initial deployments. Data acquisition is prioritized to develop technical manuals and system documents necessary for depot-level repairs, aligning with U.S. Code Title 10 requirements for government organic maintenance capability by FY 2028.
