2034A - Procurement of Ammunition, Army
Description
The MINE, AT, VOLCANO, All Types program is dedicated to enhancing the Army's tactical capabilities through the procurement of M87A1 Volcano Tactical Mine canisters. These canisters provide maneuver commanders with a tactical anti-vehicular obstacle capability. The program's primary objective is to comply with U.S. Anti-Personnel Landmine Policy while serving as a force multiplier that enables joint forces to effectively engage and overcome peer adversaries. The M87A1 canister is a one-time-use item classified as service-ready, highlighting its critical role in operational scenarios.
In fiscal year 2025, the program aims to support essential Army war reserve, operational, training, and testing requirements as outlined by Department of Defense Instruction 3000.04 and Army Regulation 5-13. These requirements are crucial for fulfilling Combatant Commander Operational Plans and Homeland Defense missions approved by the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Additionally, the program supports training for both active and reserve components at various Army schools and training centers, ensuring preparedness across all levels of military operations.
The funding request for FY 2025 is allocated towards engineering activities necessary for items currently in production. This investment is part of a broader effort to build a war reserve inventory that aligns with the Army's procurement goals. The program also addresses test requirements that are essential for the development, fielding, safety, and quality assurance of munitions throughout their lifecycle. Furthermore, this initiative supports domestic emergency responses and military assistance to civil authorities as mandated by Section 1815 of the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act.
The MINE, AT, VOLCANO program represents a strategic investment in maintaining and enhancing the Army's operational readiness and capability to respond effectively to both combat and non-combat scenarios. By focusing on engineering advancements and compliance with defense policies, this program ensures that U.S. forces remain equipped with reliable and effective tactical solutions.
