Description
The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) System Development and Demonstration program is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps, with the Army as the lead service. The initiative aims to modernize the light fleet by replacing the legacy High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) and light tactical trailers. This program supports the development and testing of the JLTV Family of Vehicles (FoV), designed to provide enhanced protection, performance, and payload capabilities. These vehicles are intended to deliver networked mobility for personnel and payloads across a broad spectrum of military operations.

A key objective of the JLTV program is to integrate advanced Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (C4I) systems into the vehicles. This includes systems such as the Marine Air Defense Integrated System (MADIS), Remote Weapons System (RWS) Cannon, Network on the Move (NOTM), among others. The integration efforts aim to enhance situational awareness and operational effectiveness on the battlefield. Additionally, the program focuses on reducing ownership costs by maximizing commonality in components, maintenance procedures, and training across different vehicle variants.

In FY 2025, significant activities include initiating design analysis for an ambulance shelter kit intended for future integration onto the Utility JLTV variant. This effort aims to replace existing HMMWV M997A2 ambulances within Logistics Combat Element units. Furthermore, ongoing efforts will continue in areas such as live fire and survivability testing of the A2 production test vehicle, energy efficiency upgrades including hybrid powertrain options, and cybersecurity vulnerability assessments.

The JLTV program also emphasizes continuous improvement through technology insertions and engineering change orders to maintain vehicle configurations compatible with various weapons platforms. By leveraging partnerships with science and technology organizations within both military branches and industry research, the program seeks opportunities for implementing increased capabilities throughout its lifecycle. This strategic approach ensures that JLTV remains adaptable to emerging threats and technological advancements while supporting ongoing modernization efforts within the Marine Corps Force Design framework.
