2034A - Procurement of Ammunition, Army
Description
The Next Generation Combat Vehicle Ammunition program is focused on developing and procuring advanced 50mm ammunition types for the Army. This initiative includes the XM1202 Target Practice with Tracer (TP-T), XM1203 Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot with Tracer (APFSDS-T), and XM1204 High Explosive Airburst with Tracer (HEAB-T) cartridges. These munitions are designed to support training, combat readiness, and operational requirements for the Army's mechanized infantry combat vehicles.
The primary goal of this program is to ensure that the Army has access to state-of-the-art ammunition that can effectively address both current and future threats. The XM1202 TP-T cartridge is intended for training purposes, providing a cost-effective solution that matches the ballistic characteristics of its combat counterpart, the XM1204 HEAB-T. Meanwhile, the XM1203 APFSDS-T cartridge is engineered to penetrate advanced armor systems, enhancing the Army's capability to neutralize heavily armored targets.
To achieve these objectives, the program leverages a Middle Tier Acquisition-Rapid Prototyping approach through the Defense Ordnance Technology Consortium. This strategy facilitates swift development and transition from prototyping to production phases. The program aims to reach Milestone C and commence Low Rate Initial Production in specified fiscal years for each cartridge type, ensuring timely availability for training and operational use.
This program supports the Army's broader mission by building up both depot-level and war reserve inventories. It aligns with Department of Defense directives and Army regulations to meet war reserve, training, and testing requirements. The funding will procure a significant number of cartridges, contributing significantly to maintaining readiness and operational effectiveness across active and reserve components.
