Description
The Common Bridge Transporter (CBT) Recap program is focused on upgrading and modernizing the Army's existing fleet of bridge transporters. The primary objective is to address obsolescence issues in the currently fielded M1977A0 and M1977A2 models, which face challenges related to crew survivability and supportability of electrical and powertrain systems. The recapitalization effort aims to enhance these vehicles by introducing the M1977A4 model. This includes improvements such as a Long Term Armor Strategy (LTAS) compliant cab, a new engine and transmission, air ride suspension, anti-lock brakes, traction control, and an updated electrical system.
The upgraded M1977A4 Common Bridge Transporter is designed to support the Multi-Role Bridge Company (MRBC) by transporting and launching critical bridging equipment like the Bridge Erection Boat (BEB) and Improved Ribbon Bridge (IRB) Bays. This capability ensures that bridging formation assets can keep pace with supported combat units. Additionally, the M1977A4 serves as a transporter and launch vehicle for the Rapidly Emplaced Bridge System (REBS), which is crucial for supporting Stryker Brigade Combat Teams (SBCT) and Airborne Combat Engineer Companies within Infantry Brigade Combat Teams (IBCT-A).
The program's goals extend beyond immediate military applications; it also supports homeland defense missions, domestic emergency responses, and military assistance to civil authorities. This aligns with Section 1815 of the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act, emphasizing the importance of maintaining readiness across both active and reserve components of the Armed Forces. The Army Acquisition Objective for this program is set at 1,928 units, reflecting its strategic significance in ensuring operational effectiveness across various military operations.
The Common Bridge Transporter Recap program is a comprehensive initiative aimed at modernizing critical bridging equipment transport capabilities within the Army. By addressing key survivability and supportability issues through technological upgrades, this program enhances both combat readiness and broader defense support roles. The focus on improving vehicle performance ensures that these transporters remain effective in diverse operational scenarios while contributing to national security objectives.
