Submarine Acoustic Warfare Development

Submarine Acoustic Warfare Development falls under the Navy's Research, Development, Test & Evaluation budget activity. The specific goals and objectives of this program include the development of acoustic countermeasures, submarine defense capabilities, external launch systems, and all acoustic augmentation systems for U.S. Navy submarines. This program is comprised of various projects such as the Submarine Defensive Warfare Program, Compact Rapid Attack Weapon (CRAW), and Non-Traditional Acoustic Communications (NTAC). The program aims to enhance submarine survivability by integrating new technologies and capabilities generated under Future Naval Capabilities (FNC), Small Business and Innovative Research (SBIR), and other Research, Development, Test & Evaluation (RDT&E) initiatives.

Project 1265, Sub Defensive Warfare, is part of the Submarine Acoustic Warfare Development Program. Its specific goal is to develop the Submarine Torpedo Defense System (SubTDS) by delivering full internal countermeasure launcher functionality to all submarines in the fleet via the Acoustic Device Countermeasure (ADC) MK5 effort. This includes conducting critical design reviews, continuing engineering development model design and prototype builds, as well as assessing known and projected torpedo threats through modeling and simulation. Additionally, the program aims to deliver Countermeasure Control Tools (CCT) and Sonar Test Units (STU-E), while also conducting assessments of threats for the Undersea Defense Working Group (UDWG) and Environment Centric Weapons Analysis Facility (ECWAF) with updated vulnerability assessments.
