Description
Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) is a research and development initiative under the Army's Long Range Precision Fires Modernization Priority. The program aims to develop the next generation surface-to-surface missile, replacing and enhancing the capabilities of the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS). Its primary objective is to provide Joint Force Commanders with a 24/7, all-weather capability to attack critical and time-sensitive area and point targets across the multi-domain battlefield, including threat air defense, missile launchers, command and control centers, assembly/staging areas, and high payoff targets. The program also focuses on integrating survivability, resiliency, and effectiveness improvements against advanced threats from near-peer adversaries. Specific requirements include a threshold max range of 400 kilometers, specified lethality against designated targets, compatibility with existing launcher platforms, and an open system approach for future growth to counter new and emerging threats.
The FY 2024 Base funding of $272.786 million supports the continuation of PrSM Increment 1 Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) and efforts to develop and integrate an Increment 2 prototype. Increment 1 EMD activities include system level ground, safety, and flight testing, as well as missile software testing and integration with the Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System (AFATDS). Increment 2 focuses on integrating Science & Technology (S&T) seeker technology into PrSM Increment 1 to meet an Army Futures Command Directed Requirement for an FY 2027 Early Operational Capability (EOC). The program's planned activities in FY 2024 include an Initial Design Review (IDR), Design Verification Testing (DVT), launcher software integration, hardware in the loop activities, and demonstration flight tests for Increment 2. These efforts are aimed at accelerating the program's development to provide enhanced capabilities for future operational needs.
Overall, Program PE 0605231A seeks to advance precision strike capabilities for the Army by developing a versatile missile system that can effectively engage a wide range of targets in various operational environments while countering evolving threats from potential adversaries.
