Description
MK-19 Grenade Machine Gun MODS aims to support the Army's modernization priorities by enhancing joint lethality in contested environments and minimizing erosion of close combat capability relative to peer competitors in complex terrain, as outlined in the National Defense Strategy. The program seeks to achieve this by improving the MK-19 Mod 3, a self-powered, air-cooled, 40mm automatic grenade machine gun used for engaging point targets up to 1,500 meters and providing suppressive fire at ranges up to 2,200 meters. The enhancements include increasing operational capabilities, improving reliability, readiness, maintainability, and safety. Additionally, the program aims to reduce the logistic burden and increase Soldier lethality through updated ballistic solutions and provide increased accuracy by equipping the MK-19 with a combined reflex and magnified optic for mounted Combat Support & Combat Service Support troops.
The specific objectives of the MK-19 Grenade Machine Gun MODS program are to enhance the system's operational capabilities and improve its reliability, readiness, maintainability, and safety. This includes implementing various system enhancements such as an improved mechanical sight through a Modification Work Order to decrease the logistic burden and increase Soldier lethality. The program also aims to equip the MK-19 with a Mounted Machine Gun Optic (MMO) to provide increased accuracy for Combat Support & Combat Service Support troops who currently have no optic. Furthermore, the program seeks to enhance hit performance and improve Soldier interface with optical sighting systems during on-the-move engagement by dampening mount movement through XM101 Programmer Unit (PU) and MK-93 Improvement Kits. These objectives align with the Army's efforts to build a more lethal force and support homeland defense missions, domestic emergency responses, and providing military support to civil authorities as mandated by Section 1815 of the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act (P.L.110-181).
