High Performance Computing Modernization Program

The High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP), is a research and development initiative within the Department of Defense (DoD) that aims to address the supercomputing requirements of DoD scientists and engineers. The program's specific objectives include demonstrating and maturing advanced computational architectures, networking technologies, and software application codes. It also focuses on leveraging expertise from various sectors, including DoD, other federal departments/agencies, industry, and academia, to ensure the DoD maintains the most advanced research ecosystem in computationally-intensive modeling and design. Additionally, the program aims to provide extensive computational capabilities to the DoD RDTE community in areas such as hardware, software, and programming environments.

The HPCMP's DS7 project within Program PE 0603461A focuses on demonstrating and maturing supercomputing environments, distributed mass storage technologies, data analysis methodologies, and digital networking technologies. The project also aims to accelerate technology capabilities to address DoD priorities and demonstrate new mechanisms for accessing supercomputers. Furthermore, it plans to mature and demonstrate over 20 high-end computers across a full range of classifications at geographically distributed DoD supercomputing resource centers. Additionally, the project will continue to enhance network transport to the commercial cloud for those HPCMP and DoD RDTE/AE communities moving computation, data storage, and other requirements to the cloud environment. These efforts collectively aim to provide advanced computational resources for important DoD research, test, and development priorities while ensuring robust network connectivity among various defense sites.
