Armored Systems Modernization (ASM) - Engineering Development, is focused on providing the necessary mobile, protected firepower capability to Infantry Brigades. The specific goal is to equip the brigades with Mobile Protected Firepower (MPF) to ensure freedom of movement during offensive operations and to defeat attacking enemies during defensive operations. This program element is aligned with the Next Generation Combat Vehicle (NGCV) Army Modernization Priority and aims to address the lack of mobile, protected firepower capability within Infantry Brigades. The program includes activities such as logistics products development, contractor technical support to test, prototype upgrades, and government test and evaluation for performance testing.

The objectives of Program PE 0604645A include the development of aids and devices to facilitate institutional training for MPF operators and maintainers. This involves the creation of Hands on Trainers (HOT), Diagnostic/Troubleshooting Trainers (DTT), Part Task Trainers (PTT), Crew Modular Unit Recorders (CMUR), an Advanced Gunnery Training System (AGTS), and an MPF Combat Vehicle Tactical Engagement Simulation System (CVTESS). Additionally, the program aims to integrate these training aids and devices with the Army's current live Tactical Engagement Simulation systems, instrumentation systems, Common Training Instrumentation Architecture, Live, Virtual Constructive-Integrated Architecture training enablers, and the future Synthetic Training Environment. The planned activities include contract awards for HOT, DTT, and AGTS development in FY 2024 to enable maintenance training of MPF turret and subsystems, computer-based simulations of MPF repair tasks in a classroom setting using a 3D virtual environment, and prototype gunnery training devices for precision gunnery tasks.
